Basements

The relief of the Limousin results from modifications which suffered a plinth (deck of crystalline rocks). The rocks of the Limousin have common points, they are formed overlapped crystals, among which the most frequent are the quartz, the feldspar and the mica.

Two big categories of these rocks are differentiated :

• the magmatic rocks, crystals of which are confusedly arranged, more frequent in the North and east of the region (granite, leuco granite),
• cristallophylliennes rocks foliated and slaty predominating in west and in the South of the region (micaschists, gneiss).

The limousin basement also contains many ores : gold and kaolin (Saint Yrieix the Pole), uranium, widely exploited during many years.
